NAGA Submission Grappling Tournament Jersey City November 17 - 18th, 2007
Congratulations to Team IMAF an excellent performance this weekend.
Victor Castello fought both no gi and gi in his first tournament. We won his first no gi fight but lost his second. A great first tournament!
Abe Zakhem won his first two fights but lost his third for first place in overtime by an advantage point resulting in second place in Men's cruiserweight. It should be noted that Abe was initially declared the winner for 1st place. Abe tried numerous takedowns and sweep attempts demonstrating superior aggressiveness. After some confusion on the part of the ref, he decided to then reverse his decision and the score card to give an advantage point to his opponent for a submission attempt the ref admitted he did not see. You must always submit the opponent so you don't have to fight the ref!
Jack Wang fought in his first tournament in the 13-15 year old division. Jack won his first fight by submission but lost a very close second fight for first place by 2 points (sweep) in an overtime round.

WEKAF Regionals, Jersey City October 21, 2007- Congratulations to Team IMAF for a very competitive performance at the WEKAF regionals which were run by grand Master "Dong" Cuesta.
Many IMAF fighters were competing in advanced divisions for the first time against well seasoned fighters and turned in outstanding performances. Most fighters qualified for the WEKAF National tournament to be held in Ca. next February. We have been developing this team for over a year now with an eye toward this current tournament series and our fighters rose to the occasion. Anchored by seasoned fighters Ken Gruber, Tung Cheng and Team Captian Chris Praml Team IMAf has turned out to be a very competitive team.
Special note to Tung Cheng for a spectacular fight with James B. from GM Dong's school in a 3 round reduced gear match.
Thanks to Abe, Harry, Nicole and Ginny and to the parents and family's that came to support the team.

PIMA Invitational - May 6th 2007 -Jersey City - Congratulations again to Team IMAF, the largest team we have fielded yet. With 12 adult fighters and 5 children fighting in a number of events IMAF brought home some heavy metal.
Just a note of congratulations to all the teams that showed up to fight. California, Denver and Md came with a lot of talent. This was a great opportunity for all the fighters to see what the current state of talent is out there. Also congratulations to Sonny Mayo's school and to PIMA for great kids matches (no gi grappling, kickboxing and stick fighting). These were hard fought matches with a lot of skill. Also thanks to Master Dong for a great seminar Saturday and another great tournament Sunday.
Lastly, Team IMAF put in a good amount of training time and it showed. Every fighter has shown improvement in every tournament. Guro Chris, IMAF Team Captian, has done a great job with the training and developing training tapes for the fighters to watch.

NAGA April 21st 2007 - Congratulations to Team IMAF in what was a VERY LONG day at NAGA.. Mindy , Chris, Harry and Anthony C. all turned in some great performances. This was an especially difficult tournament as it ran so late it has a negative impact on the fighters. They all showed determination for being there hand hanging till the end!
Mindy - 3rd Place, Womens White Belt light weight Gi - Mindy had two fights - she won one with another text book cross arm bar submission in a tough fight and lost one on points to the women who won the division. An impressive performance
Chris - 2nd Place Mens Blue Belt light heavy weight Gi - Chris had three fights - starting at after 11PM - Chris had three tough opponents in the blue Belt light heavyweight division. He executed beautiful take downs in each fight scoring right away. In his first two fights, though up on points, he ended the fights with submission. The first was rear naked choke and the second was an arm bar. He lost this third fight, for 1st place, on points. An overall solid performance.
Harry - Men's heavy weight - Gi - displayed a determined fight with some exceptional submission attempts until re-injuring a bad shoulder.
Anthony C - Men's heavyweight - No Gi - His extensive wrestling background showed as after only a few classes he started out with an incredible take down followed by a rear naked choke. In his second fight he again secured another great take down and dominated his opponent, a purple belt, until getting caught in a heel hook.
I want to thank all the family, students etc.that came down to watch and support the team in this long day. We didn't finish up until 12PM in what is becoming typical NAGA fashion.

Children
Joey Dellosso - 2nd Place Childrens advanced division. Joe was up 10 -0 and in the last minute got caught in a Kimura . Joe dominated the entire fight and displayed excellent skill in take downs guard defense sweeps etc..
Sam Bucca - Same also competed in the Children's advanced division where he was up 12 -2 and in the last minute got caught in a choke while taking his opponent down again. Sam also displayed excellent movement especially take downs and dominated the fight!
Ethan Reisboard - Ethan competed in the Children's beginner division as this was his first tournament. Ethan displayed incredible heart and a toughness that got him on to the team. While Ethan lost his match , he showed that as his skill increases he has what it takes to compete successfully.
Teens
John Lodato - John trained hard for this tournament and was expected to medal. His skill on the mat has been impressive and he has shown movement and submission ability at a level above his current rank. John couldn't compete as he broke his foot during a lite warm up with Sifu Don before the start of the matches. John is an important member of the competition team and we wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the mat soon. Class will be VERY QUITE without John!!
Adults
Mindy Raisor - 3rd Place -Women's Middle weight (Class B) Division. Mindy, a 1 stripe White Belt competed in a division where all women of this weight class were combined, regardless of experience. Mindy put on an incredible performance winning 2 out of 3 fights, both by arm bar submission with text book set up's. He loss was on points to a more experience Blue Belt. Her hard training sessions paid off.
Harry Hunckin Jr.- Men's White Belt Heavy Weight Division. Harry started off with a bang and nearly nailed a flying Arm Bar on an opponent that outweighed him by almost 40 pounds. The fight settled with hism opponent getting side mount with Harry pulling half guard where the fight settled. The weight proved too much and Harry lost on points. I have to say I was VERY impressed at the flying arm bar attempt.
Chris Praml. - Men's Cruiser Weight Blue Belt. - Chris's second tournament as a blue belt ( this first he submitted 3 out of four opponents). His first fight was against a 4 stripe blue Belt. Chris showed excellent movement and skill and out pointed his opponent but as it seem to go in this tournament, got caught in a submission. This fight showed Chris's ability to compete successfully in the Blue Belt Division.
Abe Zakhem - Mens Cruiser Weight White Belt - Abe had two fights and won both of them . His first fight was won quickly by triangle choke with a beautiful set up. His second fight was a tough fight but Abe was up on points and battled a late submission attempt to take the win. During that fight Abe hurt his hand and couldn't close it. The tournament doc suspected he dislocated it. While was willing to try to compete again we decided to call it a day. It was clear that he was a top competitor in that division and had an excellent chance of medaling.

I am proud of our children and parents in the way they conducted themselves and represented IMAF! Character that competition and training builds is the greatest reward of all, not the medals!
"Battle at the Boardwalk" February 17 - 19, 2006 (tournament results and Living Legends award presented to Sifu Don
Tournament Results: (See some pics below - more to come) Atlantic City Convention Center - IMAF students competed in Full contact stickfighting, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and San Shou kickboxing. Note that it has been an IMAF trait to be able to compete in various fighting styles as our training is so broad. Competitors trained hard for many hours and their training shows through not only in their superior technique but in their superior attitude as well. IMAF's competition team included:
BJJ:
James Goldman - continues undefeated in 5 fights and earned another gold medal and more importantly - the attention of BJJ black belts Jean Jacques Machado and Sensei Johnny Guerrero.
Joey Dellosso - showed much improved technique and movement (great guard defense) that earned him another medal.
Sam Bucca - first tournament - despite being the smallest/youngest competitor there by far, Sam showed the biggest heart and effort that earned him a medal.
Chase Madorsky - first tournament - Chase showed great competitive spirit (winning against an experienced opponent) and fought his way to a medal.
Nicolette Minto - first tournament - 9 year old Nicolette was put in with 13 year old competitors and fought two hard fights earning the respect of her competitors and a bronze medal in a teen division.
Harry Hunckin Jr. - Way to go Harry - beautiful textbook set up to a triangle. Worked the rubber guard flawlessly, old school sweeps etc.. Won his first fight by submission - Lost a close second fight by points.
Chris Praml - jumped from Eskrima to BJJ at the last minute - despite shoulder injury, he won his first fight by submission.- great job.
San Shou kickboxing:
Daniel Goloborodko - Daniel has the distinction of being the first IMAF student to compete in a cage match. Daniel 's opponent was much older and heavier and a Black Belt . Daniel (a blue Belt) accepted the fight any way, refusing chest protective gear while his opponent was fully padded. Daniel fought what had to be one of the most action packed fights of the tournament and while losing the decision displayed heart that even the other coach came over to congratulate him. Daniel definitely earned his SILVER medal. - GREAT JOB!

Tung Cheng - single stick - gold, Tournament "Grand Champion", knife fighting - Silver, double stick - Gold
Solomon Wheeler - single stick - silver, and double stick - silver
Steve Grossbard - (first tournament) Gold - single stick

Additionally, thanks to all the family members
and students that came down to support the team and help out with running
the tournament.
