Student Handbook (rev - Sept 2007)

Attendance

IMAF's program is a comprehensive blend of different martial arts styles. In order to realize the full benefits of this type of program you MUST commit yourself to training. We are realistic and realize that not everyone can attend every class. We therefore offer a number of classes per night in each style we teach in order to give the student the opportunity to train. Our expectation is for each student to train a MINIMUM of 3 times per week.

If you are away on vacation or will be out for more than a week you MUST inform your instructor. We monitor each students progress and attempt to follow up with a student when they are missing for more than a week. Your progress and RANK progressions depend on your time on the mat!

Martial Arts Class Rules/Safety

Courtesy/Respect

  • Always BOW before entering and leaving class
  • Students line up in rank order higher ranks in the front and from right to left
  • NEVER enter class when you are late without instructor permission
  • If you are late please line up in back of the class to avoid disrupting class
  • If you must leave class first ask permission.
  • Always address instructor as sir/Guro or Sifu
  • Always respond to  instructions with "Yes sir" or "OPO" in FMA classes
NOTE  PLEASE NOTE that IMAF teaches a number of fighting arts that require equipment/clothing specific to that art. PLEASE make sure you are equipped for the class you are attending!

Equipment & Safety

We have gone to great lengths to make our programs among the safest in the nation. It is therefore important that all students follow the guidance of the instructor and exercise proper control when working on techniques or sparring. To further eliminate the possibility of injury, protection ( groin cups, mouth pieces, gloves and head gear) is mandatory for all sparring classes.

No protective gear – no sparring – no exceptions!

  • Children MUST have Equipment Pack 1 for all classes and "Equip Pack 2" in order to spar (BBC only) - See Front Desk for info
  • BJJ - Gi = Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Gi is required)
  • Submission Grappling/Shooto - "No gi" -grappling shorts and knee pads are recommended but BJJ Gi pants is acceptable (MUST have mouth piece, groin cup shin protectors and fingerless gloves.)
  • JKD = Jeet Kune Do (kickboxing/ trapping skills - must have full protective equipment for sparring - (school pants and shirt are mandatory)
  • Eskrima -  Doce Pares - must have  olisi (stick) and Baraw (knife) - (school pants and shirt are mandatory)
  • Muay Thai - (MUST have mouth piece, groin cup, shin/instep protectors and gloves) Muay Thai shorts recommended!

Optional safety gear that is highly recommended includes rib guards, protective bra for female students and forearm guards as needed.

These items are stocked by the studio and must be purchased through IMAF to ensure they meet our safety standards. If there are any questions concerning equipment or regulations, please contact the chief instructor. Following the above guidelines will ensure a safe and enjoyable workout for all.

All Gear must be purchased through  IMAF to ensure safety. If you already have gear ask your instructor to inspect it to ensure it meets IMAF standards.

Uniforms

Students MUST wear the uniform appropriate for the art they are studying. Uniforms must be clean and free of any damage that may cause injury.

Student Progression

 Adult Program

Progression in our adult program is recognized in "Phases" for Jeet Kune Do (JKD) and Levels for Doce Pares Eskrima. In JKD there are three major Phases all leading toward the Apprentice Instructor level followed by Associate Instructor and then Full Instructor. All JKD ranking is recognized by Sifu Richard Bustillo of the IMB, (an original student of the late Bruce Lee, the founder of JKD). Doce Pares ranking is recognized in 5 Major Levels leading to Black Belt in the “ Multi Style” system of Doce Pares Eskrima. Ranking is recognized by Master Arnulfo Cuesta. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu advancement is provided by Fernando Sarmento jr. who IMAF is affiliated with. Muay Thai ranking is provided by Ron Balicki who is a certified Muay Thai instructor. See the Ranking chart below for children, Doce Pares and Jeet Kune do ranking progressions.

Children's Program

As part of our program, we have included visible as well as intangible rewards for our students. The visible rewards include different colored belts  (See the Ranking chart below) that are the symbols of ever increasing levels of expertise in the Martial Arts.

Students are tested in 3 month cycles until they reach upper belt level when the testing period is somewhat longer. It is ultimately up to the instructor to approve when a student is ready for testing.

IMAF Payment Policy

IMAF has a number of payment plans available. You are encouraged to select the one that best fit’s your training needs and will result in uninterrupted training. You are purchasing a Martial Arts Program, not individual classes, so payments are due regardless of whether or not you attend classes. It is the student’s responsibility to attend class although IMAF will make every effort through phone calls and written communication to help keep the student motivated.

IMAF offers family discounts so see your Program Director for details.

IMAF uses credit card only. All payments are due on the first of the month regardless of when the student starts. Under this method the student will have more than one month of training left when their last payment is made thereby ensuring a complete training program.

Late payments incur a “late payment fee” of $10 per week late which MUST be paid with the tuition payment

All payments must be up to date before a student can attend promotion testing or any IMAF sponsored events.

IMAF Referral Policy

IMAF recognizes that it's best source of new students is it's current students. As such IMAF has a very generous referral policy for existing students.

If an existing  student refers another person who signs an annual training agreement with IMAF, the referring student will receive a FREE MONTH (added on to the students contract.) or a credit to an additional month of training if the value of the new students monthly tuition rate if it is less then the referring students.

If a an existing client refers someone who

  • signs for a fitness 10 pack, that student will receive a FREE  fitness class.

  • signs for a personal training 10 session program, that person will receive a FREE personal training session.

Tiger Cub referrals will receive a FREE class deducted off the value of their program price.

Note that IMAF does not give out cash awards but offers FREE services as payment!
